How to Choose the Right PVC-U Window Installer for Your Home

3 ways to choose a high-quality window installer

We often get bombarded with mass media advertisements about window fitting businesses, and how they can help you by fitting in new windows. But underneath all the big advertisements, how can we distinguish those finer details to get a professional window installer? With so many window fitting businesses around, it can be difficult to find the right one to suit your needs.  Firstly, you will need to decide what type of windows you would like, whilst there are many variations – PVC-U windows are a popular choice.  Not only can they withstand harsh weathering, but they are also well-known for their durability. They don’t warp or split and can offer improved comfort to your home, by being able to keep the heat in – which can save some costs on your electricity bill.

Finding a UPVC window fitter can be a task in itself – but it’s important to remember not to opt for the cheaper choice because you could be compromising on quality.  Many companies will offer competitive pricing, and will have their way of carrying out their work – so how do you know which one to go for?

Here are 3 ways to help you when choosing a good PVCU window installer:

  1. Ensure that they are FENSA/CERTASS-approved.

FENSA (The Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) was set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation.

CERTASS Ltd is a UKAS-approved certification body for the operation of a competent person scheme, under local government. Both FENSA and CERTASS were created as a response to the Building Regulations for double-glazing companies, in England and Wales.

When you decide to have your windows changed, you must ensure that you have a FENSA/CERTASS certificate.  When your chosen window company carries out work on your home, if they are members of FENSA/CERTASS, they must issue you with a compliance certificate.

This will give you peace of mind, as a percentage of their work will be vetted by FENSA/CERTASS. When it comes to selling your property, you may also need to provide a copy of this certificate to your solicitors, before the purchasing process of the house begins.

You won’t need both FENSA and CERTASS certificates, but having one of these is a requirement and has been since April 2002.  It will ensure that your work has been done safely, and will have an insurance guarantee on the work carried out.  FENSA will check for safety issues, fire risks, and other health and safety-related issues, related to the window fitting service you will have received.

  1. Recommendations

Do your research into the companies that you are thinking of getting your windows fitted from.  If you are looking for new windows, then looking at the previous work the company has done for other clients can reassure you, and a good idea of the type of quality of their work.  Seeing examples of other windows they have fitted beforehand can be a really big help.

  1. How long have they been in business?

Whilst cost may be an important factor, you don’t want to compromise on quality. If you are considering UPVC windows, you must check the business you want these from.  It has often been suggested that a business that has been going for around 5 or more years may have more experience, and could therefore offer a better service.  Looking at previous projects a company has worked on will give you a rough idea of how long they have been in business.
