Home Plumbing Repair
Probably the common home plumbing repair problems you will face are:
- Clogged drains
- Plugged toilets
You can always call a plumber to fix these problems but it will cost you quite a bit of money. If you want to save money on these home plumbing repairs, you will need to learn to fix them yourself.
Clogged drains
If your home plumbing repair is a clogged drain try to clear the drain with a plunger. If the sink you are working on is a double sink make sure and plug the other sink before you start plunging. If this method doesn’t clear the clog you might need to use a plumbers snake.
Remove the P-trap
To use a plumber snake, you’ll need to remove the P-trap. Set a bucket under the P-trap before you take it apart. Check to make sure the clog isn’t in the trap itself. Push the snake into the drain until you feel resistance. Then turn the handle pushing the snake forward. After you have broken through the clog, run hot water through the pipes. If the debris from the clog doesn’t drain quickly then try the plunger again.
Plugged toilet
The second most common home plumbing repair is a plugged toilet. You want to try the plunger first. Use a flanged or ball plunger for the toilet. A cup plunger has flat edges which work great for a sink or bathtub but will lose suction on a toilet. If the plunger doesn’t fix your home plumbing repair then try a toilet or closet auger.
You will need to determine which way your toilet drains (either to the front or to the rear). Depending on which way your toilet drains, you will want the curved end of the auger handle to face that direction. Make sure you never force the cable when you are pushing it forward because you may break the porcelain. If you feel like something like the clog has broken through pull the cable out and check it.
After breaking through the clog use the plunger again. Don’t flush the toilet until you are sure the clog has been removed. You can pour a bucket of water into the toilet and if it drains out then you’ve cleared the clog. Once you are sure the clog has been cleared then you can flush the toilet. Following these easy steps, you should save money on these two types of home plumbing repairs.
